Sardar and Baloch Nation

Baloch have always lived in a tribal and nomadic society where the appointed someone as Head/Leader of the tribe who was competent and wise enough to lead the tribe during a conflict and hardship. With the passage of time the tribes grew larger so did the powers of the Leader of the tribe. In Baloch traditions the Sardar (Leader) was always selected on democratic principles and he was selected on the mutual consensus of all people of the tribe. The role and responsibilities of a Sardar were very various which included: Protection of the rights of the tribe, Protection of the rights of every individual of the tribe, keeping the diplomatic relationships with other tribes, Conflict resolution within the tribe and with other tribes and taking care of needs of the tribe specially the widowed women and orphanage children.

With passage of time the Sardar got stronger and as a result the democratic selection of a Sardar was replaced by hereditary. Which was the first step turning a Sardar into a monarch/dictator, with absolute powers to rule the tribe. The institution of a Sardar remained loyal to his tribe and he was bound to protect the rights and interests of his tribe and made alliances with other tribes keeping in view interests of his tribe.

During the Period of Sardar Chakar Azam, all Baloch tribes rallied under his flag and from tribe took the form of a confederation and formed a State. Unfortunately this first Baloch state was destroyed due to the rivalry and personal skirmish of Sardar Chakar Rind and Sardar Gwahram Lashari, by fighting a 40 years long war. Later a confederation of tribes was formed by a Sardar from Qambarani Tribe by Abdullah Qahar and strengthened by His son Khan Nasir Khan, who was recognized as the leader of all tribes of Balochs and all Sardars adhered their loyalty to him, hence the First Baloch State with the name of Balochistan was formed. The Sardars of different tribes represented their tribes and were bound to provide man and material at the time of war to the Khan of Kalat.

With the advent of Britishers in Balochistan (British Balochistan) the Sardari System was corrupted to a maximum level in order to control the Baloch Nation, Sardars were provided with incentives, money and titles in order to buy their loyalties in favor of British slavery, except few most of the Sardars sold their loyalty and played for the interests of the Britishers. Today if we compare the Sardari System in the areas under British Balochistan and those under Khanate we find the Sardari system still very strong under the British Balochistan.

Due to these Sardars it became possible for the British Occupiers of Balochistan to strengthen their grip over Balochistan, and after the Britishers it was again the same Sardars who conspired against the independent Baloch State and helped Punjabis to occupy Balochistan, Sardars like Jam of Lesbela, Nawab of Kharan, and Nawab of Makuran will never be forgiven in Baloch history for their extremely dirty role in making secret deal with Pakistan for enslavement of Baloch Nation.

Baloch Nation will also not forgive the Khan of Kalar Ahmedyar Khan of cowardly accepting the forced accession of Balochistan. Ahmedyar Khan also served in British army as a paid soldier and was involved in the operation against Baloch Freedom Fighter Shaheed Mir Ali Dost Mengal, it is said that when Mir Ali dost was arrested badly wounded and brought for medical assistance Ahmedyar Khan visited him, where Mir Ali Dost Mengal spitted on the face of Ahmedyar Khan for his undignified and coward act of fighting for the occupiers as a paid soldier. After the start of military onslaught and genocide of Baloch Nation on 1973-77 Nawab Akber Khan Bugti resigned from the post of Governorship, but Khan Ahmedyar Khan accepted the position and exposed his real evil face of being an anti-Baloch. His grandson Khan Suleman Dawood and his brothers had kept the legacy of their Grandfather in weakening and harming Baloch nation by conspiring with the occupiers of Balochistan. Grand Baloch Jirga and Bangkok Conference are examples of their negative role in Baloch Politics.

During the same period one finds another opportunist and greedy tribal chieftain Sardar Dooda Khan Zehri who played the role of biggest enemy of Baloch Nation just to appease his master’s i.e. Punjabi occupation forces. His sons kept his legacy and are still playing a similar role till date by breaking Baloch Political Parties and dividing Baloch nation. Sardar Sana ullah Zehri the eldest son of Sardar Doda Khan, had recently break all records of shamelessness by joining PML (N) and collaborating with the Pro Punjabi domination political party.

Nawab Zada Changaiz Marri is an active member of Pro Punjabi Domination Party PML (N), one wonders of the situation when Changaiz Marri will lead the tribe.

It’s time for the Baloch Nation for taking the final decision against tribal system and get rid of Sardars, it’s the only way to get rid of their miseries and rise as sovereign Nation on the map of World.

Divide & Rule

In politics and sociology, divide and rule (also known as divide and conquer) is a combination of political, military and economic strategy of gaining and maintaining power by breaking up larger concentrations of power into chunks that individually have less power than the one implementing the strategy. In reality, it often refers to a strategy where small power groups are prevented from linking up and becoming more powerful, since it is difficult to break up existing power structures.

Typical elements of Divide & Conquer/Divide & Rule technique are said to involve:
  • Creating or encouraging divisions among the subjects in order to forestall alliances that could challenge the sovereign.
  • Aiding and promoting those who are willing to cooperate with the sovereign.
  • Fostering distrust and enmity between local rulers.
  • Encouraging frivolous expenditures that leave little money for political and military ends.
The use of this strategy was imputed to administrators of vast empires, including the Roman and British, who were charged with playing one tribe against another to maintain control of their territories with a minimal number of imperial forces. The concept of "Divide and Rule" gained prominence when India was a part of the British Empire, but was also used to account for the strategy used by the Romans to take Britain, and for the Anglo-Normans to take Ireland. It is said that the British used the strategy to gain control of the large territory of India by keeping its people divided along lines of religion, language, or caste, taking control of petty princely states in India piecemeal.

Soon after the departure of the British Empire from Balochistan and Indian sub-continent the British empire sowed the seed of division and mutual distrust in order to keep their indirect rule over the region, first step was the creation of Pakistan by dividing Subcontinent into three parts, India. West Pakistan and East Pakistan, similarly divided Balochistan into three parts i.e. Kalat State, Iranian occupied Balochistan and Afghanistan Occupied Balochistan. After the division of Balochistan Britishers added salt to an injury by conspiring for the occupation of Independent Baloch State and hence making Balochistan a colony of Pakistan.

Pakistan inherited the policy divide & Rule from British Empire and since then Pakistan is continuously trying to divide Baloch tribes and political parties. Some of the examples:
  • Making rift and exploiting them among the four states (Kalat, Lesbela, Makuran & Kharan) of Balochistan to a point that three of them in order to harm the interests of Kalat state unanimously joined newly created state of Pakistan.
  • Making differences between NAP leadership and Nawab Bugti through their Agents like Gul Khan Naseer.
  • Making division among the Marri Tribes under the banner of Nawab Khair Bakash Marri and Mir Hazar Khan.
  • Promoting tribal conflict within Bugti Tribal groups like Kalpar, Massori & Raija Bugtis.
  • Promoting tribal conflicts between Bugti vs Domki, Bugti vs Mazari, Bugti vs Marri, Rind vs Raisani, etc.
  • Making fractions and divisions in BSO, BNM and BNP from time to time.
The techniques of divide and rule don’t ended here, since 2005 the Punjabis have very systematically tried to divide Baloch nation and playing wisely and cunningly. Some examples are:
  • After the martyrdom of Nawab Bugti the Punjabies and their agents accused Shaheed Balach Marri to be behind it and accused marri tribe for taking revenge from Nawab Bugti for his role in 1970’s.
  • Similarly the same group of people tried to accuse Bramdagh Bugti for Murdering Shaheed Balach Marri when he was martyred.
  • The same group made blogs like sardarwatch.wordpress.com in order to create further rifts and used the event of Bangkok Conference as an opportunity to divide Baloch diaspora.
  • During may 2010 Pakistani Prime minister visited Sardar Ataullah Mengal and as a result some immature people started accusing Sardar Ataullah Mengal, this situation created another tug of war between BNP and Anjuman-e-Ithad-e Marri.
It’s the time for Baloch Nation to realize the conspiracies of enemies and avoid playing in their hands for making differences and divisions in Bloch Nation and political Party.

If God forbids the enemy succeeded in making serious divisions and civil war like situation then it will be a severe damage to Baloch Cause the glorified success the Baloch Nation had attained in last 10 years of the armed resistance with the blood and sacrifices of the sons and daughters of Baloch Nation. Please Identify and Isolate those agents of Punjabies which are creating rifts among different Baloch fractions, tribal groups and political parties.

Balochistan or Baloch-Pashtun Province

Balochistan, along with the Khyber Pakthunkwa are the victims of an imaginary line, called Durand Line, which was described by Hamid Karzai, the Afghan president as the “line of Evil”. In deed that line signifies both the British and Pakistani imperialism that have subjugated the Baloch and the Pashtuns.
In 1893, the Afghan and British governments agreed to demark a 2,450-kilometer (1,519 miles) long border dividing British India and Afghanistan. The signatory of the document, known as The Durand Line Agreement, were Amir Abdur Rahman Khan, ruler of Afghanistan, and Sir Henry Mortimer Durand, the foreign secretary of the British Indian government. After a series of battles and false treaties signed by the British, ‘The Durand Line Agreement’ of 1893 divides boundaries between three sovereign countries, namely Afghanistan, Balochistan and British India. According to that agreement Britain had taken a lease of the area in N.W.F.P and Balochistan, without the knowledge of Balochistan. Sir Durand gave verbal assurance to Afghanistan that the lease will last until 1993, but in the written agreement there is no mention of it. Otherwise just like Hong Kong, N.W.F.P would have gone back to Afghanistan in 1993.
The Durand Line Agreement should be a trilateral agreement and it legally required the participation and signatures of all three countries. However, the clever British drawn the agreement bilaterally between Afghanistan and British India only, and it intentionally excluded Balochistan. Thus, Balochistan has never accepted the validity of the Durand Line. The British, under false pretenses, assured the Afghan rulers that Balochistan was part of British India, and therefore, they were not required to have the consent of anyone from Balochistan to agree on demarking borders. Meanwhile, the British kept the Baloch rulers in the dark about the Durand Line Agreement to avoid any complications. According to International Law, all affected parties are required to agree to any changes in demarking their common borders. Hence, under the rules of demarking boundaries of the International Law, the Agreement of Durand Line was in error, and thus, it was null and void as soon as it was signed.
Also, International Law states that boundary changes must be made among all concerned parties; and a unilateral declaration by one party has no effect. However, the British government disregarding the objection of Afghanistan gave away the N.W.F.P to Pakistan after a fraud plebiscite. However, it never gave Baluchistan to Pakistan in the same way the British never gave away Jammu & Kashmir to India.

The Implications of Durand Line in Balochistan:
The Durand line not only divided the Baloch and Afghan Countries but also creating confusions and differences between the people living in the Pakistan occupied Balochistan. Due to this Imaginary boundary which was never accepted by Baloch nation is today creating rifts among the Baloch and Pashtuns/Afghans.
Baloch Nation is fighting a war of independence against Pakistani occupation, and Baloch should expect support of their Pashtun brothers who are for generation living side by side with the Baloch and millions of Afghans refugees were supported and accommodated in Balochistan after the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. The same Afghan Refugees illegally through bribery and support of Pakistani Authorities got the nationality of Pakistan and are now siding against Baloch Nation.
In past few years one can observe the negative role Pashtuns of Balochistan against Baloch movement.

Pashtun don’t let any chance of defaming Baloch Cause go unturned, just for instance we never find the Pashtuns protesting the massacre of Baloch political activists or Baloch women and children, but if in reaction to the murder of Baloch a Punjabi settler is killed, the Pashtun start a planned campaign to condemn the killing of a Punjabi, similarly the afghans are using the name of BLA to threat the Punjabi settlers in Balochistan in order to buy their property at a cheaper price. In this way not only the afghan are buying property in Quetta but also defaming Baloch nation for being barbarian and violent against civilians.
Similarly we see the Pashtun leaders calling Balochistan as Baloch Pashtun province and showing their hatred towards Baloch nation by not even tolerating the name Balochistan, in the same way wherever the word Balochistan is used in a institute or something these racist Pashtuns try to ignore it or use any other word instead, just for example University of Balochistan is referred as Quetta University, whereas the official name of the institute is University of Balochistan.
Mehmood Khan Achakzai in his interview claimed the right of Pashtuns over Quetta, Sibi and Bolan, ignoring the historical background and demographic realities. This is deliberate attempt to blackmail Baloch leadership at a time when Baloch are at war with Pakistan’s mighty army and intelligence agencies. Sibi was the capital of Mir Chakar Rind and winter capital of Kalat State, with majority population of Baloch.
Pakistan occupied Balochistan is comprised of 30 district out of which only districts are Pashtun populated whereas 21 belong to Baloch, and still the Pashtuns claim to be in majority of the population of Balochistan.
Each year on 14th of August Balochistan observe the day as Black day, even the Punjabi settlers do not raise Pakistani flags in Balochistan, but the Pashtuns intentionally challenge Baloch and raise Pakistani flags on their homes. Moreover recent statements and the planned attack on Baloch Students in University of Balochistan and Agriculture Collage, shows the real intentions of Pashtuns.
Pashtuns of Balochistan are playing in the hands of Punjabis for protecting their interests and have their shares of the resources of Balochs.
It’s the time for Balochs to realize the evil faces of Pashtuns and that they are not the well-wishers of Balochs, but taking advantage of the situation and exploiting the rights of Baloch people.
